My first blog...hope you like it

May 22, 2014

It's May 22, 2014, and this is the first Mercedes Flowers blog. I was born with the name Mercedes Garza Cortazar. Not long ago, I married a wonderful man and soon it will officially be changed to Mercedes Cortazar Anderson. I am fortunate that I have had an amazing life—and I am only 38;)

Every morning I get ready to drive about 2 miles to the shop I always dreamed about. My incredibly charming flower shop. I sell flowers. I design flowers. I love flowers. My mom had the same feeling and she did it for over 35 years—it makes me wonder how long I will get to do it. Here in Austin, I've been doing it for three years! Yay! We've made it three years.

Now that you know who I am, I can talk all about the passion I have for flowers and my daily experiences with them. I’m lucky enough that I also get to interact with fantastic people like you. Man, do I have good stories to tell! If these flowers could talk, I wonder what they would say about the wonderful experiences at Mercedes Flowers.

Today a gentleman came in, his name is Steve. It's his anniversary and I really wanted him to wow her! I was thrilled to show him what I had, but when we both looked into my main cooler we saw different things. I saw an elaborate, stunning, breath taking arrangement filled with such beautiful colors—not yet put together, as we custom make everything. In my buckets I had hydrangeas, pink and coral roses, pin cushions, ranunculus, anemones, eucalyptus (my only filler/green) and tulips.

He said, "That's all you have, kind of sad no? Can't do much with that."

I was shocked and didn't quite know how to respond, so I laughed! I love laughing, mainly at myself! Then I said, “Steve, I wouldn’t be here if I didn't know how  the flowers I hand pick myself every day can be made into something super special!”

Steve was still not convinced. I wasn’t sure what I should do!

I recommended someone else, but he looked at me and said, "How much are we talking about?"

Oh NO! That infamous question. I always panic, but people, flowers are not cheap!

I said, "My deliveries start at $75."

"You didn't answer my question," he said.

I simply replied, “We can do anything, Steve!”

After 10 minutes and many laughs (he is also an entrepreneur), Steve left truly amazed! The arrangement was fairly tall, so I offered him a box and he declined.

And just now, the phone rang. I panicked and thought, “It's him! Oh no! Did he drop his flowers?”

Nope. Steve just told me his wife was so taken aback that she cried!

I was thrilled and realized, "Wow, I just made another life time friend."

Yup, flowers have brought so much! That's how I met my husband with whom I had the most beautiful wedding. Flowers helped me meet one of my closest friends (I designed flowers for her wedding). You see, flowers give me what everyone needs—the human connection that speaks to the heart. I know you may be thinking this all sounds a bit sappy, but come and see me. You’ll know exactly what I mean. Soon enough, we can call each other friends too and you will fall in love with, as Steve calls them, "Sad Flowers." :)
